Cribbage Supplies Metal Pegs

As opposed to many other games involving cards, Cribbage is pretty involved. Comparable to the drinking game “Kings” where there are many rules regarding when to drink, Cribbage instead awards points. Players attempt to reach the preset amount of 121 points by playing hands. Because of the sheer volume of points earned in one hand and the large number that’s being shot for, Cribbage makes use of a board and each player’s total is represented by a peg that fits within the board. As players earn points, they move their peg forward the number of points that they’ve earned. Some people go above and beyond just playing with the normal pegs though: people invest in Cribbage supplies; metal pegs that can be customized are most popular amongst die-hard Cribbage players, for instance.

Playing Cribbage

Cribbage plays like poker in a sense that there are flushes and straights and you get points for pairs, triplets and quadruples. You work to make a hand based off of your dealt hand and an open card that the dealer shows. Dealers have a built in advantage as they can get points simply for revealing a jack as the “up card”, (the one you can play off of) and their awarded points are called the “dealers nibs”. If you enjoy any of the following games, Cribbage may be well suited for you:

  • Spades
  • Poker
  • Blackjack
  • Kings

Though a large degree of the game relies on luck, skill at playing full hands is important as is quick thinking to get to 121 fastest.

Customized Pegs

The reason that people customize their pegs when they are die-hard Cribbage players is the same reason why goalies of National League Hockey teams will get face masks with elaborate paintings of their team mascot or logo: it represents you, pure and simple. Pegs can be made out of copper, aluminum and steel but those are just a few of the available options. If you find a qualified machinist, you could even go a step further and have your pegs made custom to order from scratch! Usually people will buy pre-lathed pegs and then adorn the tops with embedded jewelry or glass beads of different colors or with images at the bottom. An element of irony can play at work when customizing your pegs also; if you’re particularly tall, there’s no rule against pegs being a bit longer and vice versa for shorter pegs.

Getting Your Set of Customized Cribbage Pegs

If you’re interested in getting started on customizing your set of Cribbage pegs, you should first invest in the cribbage supplies, “metal pegs” first. After you’ve got the pegs, other supplies such as beads or jewels can be added on later. If you opt to have a machinist make you pegs, just be sure to provide them with all of the dimensions of the peg ahead of time. If you have a Cribbage peg around the house, you may want to provide it to them as a model for measurements.
