Metal Pegs

Metal Pegs

Metal pegs are used for a variety of purposes across a slew of different industries and products. For instance, machine heads are the metal pegs atop a guitar that change the pitch of the strings. There are also pegs that are fixed to the wall above window spaces to hold curtain rods. Metal pegs are all around us and their uses are as limitless as our imaginations and will to use them. As a fundamental mechanical design, the peg remains among the most popular pieces used in manufacturing and construction.

Uses for Metal Pegs

There are many uses for metal pegs: so many that even an attempt to count them wouldn’t encompass even a fraction of their uses. Instead of listing the uses of metal pegs, look at this list of commonly known metal pegs that you’ve probably seen hundreds to thousands of times but never gave appreciation to as being a peg.

  • Door hinge peg – Doors are things you pass through daily. Residential homes and most door frames have doors that sit on hinges. Hinges make use of a peg through their center to connect the door with the frame. Without this peg, the door cannot swing open and shut.
  • Curtain rod peg – Your curtain rods don’t float over top of your window spaces: they need to be fixed into the wall. For this reason, valence curtain rods have been designed that make use of a valence to cover the metallic poles of the rod and pegs that extend from the rod to hold the valence.
  • Bicycle peg – For second riders or for awesome grinding tricks, bicycles make use of pegs on both sides of the rear axle.
  • Motorcycle peg – The inherent difference between motorcycle pegs and bicycle pegs is that motorcycle pegs are for the primary rider and they can fold upward into the design of the bike whereas bicycle pegs are screwed in tightly and do not move.

Installation of Metal Pegs on a Bike

When putting pegs on a bike, you need the right tools first and foremost. Check out Sears.com and find out the measurements of the nuts and bolts on your bike. Get all necessary tools first, then follow the instructions that came with the pegs. Pegs usually come with instructions on how to install them – if not, there are diagrams and step by steps online outlaying the process visually.

Other Commonly Referred to Pegs

As stated, pegs are a widely encompassing mechanical part: they are used across industries and won’t always be used for the same thing. For example, pegs in brass instruments are used to release accumulated spit from the brass chambers of the instrument. Saxophones are entire networks of buttons, pegs and pads that either stop or release air being forced through the instrument, changing its pitch. Machine heads are, as stated, the things that change pitch on a guitar – however, a guitar has more pegs! Often the strap peg may get loose and fall out. Replacing them is cheap, though.
