Steel Pegs
There are a wide variety of uses for metal pegs and steel is among the most desirable metals as it is slow to rust when galvanized and stronger than most other metals. Steel pegs are used for things as simple as holding and organizing tools but they’re also used for such complex tricks as the backwards rail grind to 50/50 as in BMX riding. Steel pegs are durable and even when subjected to high heat, they maintain their integrity.
Regardless of what the pegs are being used for, it has never been easier to buy pegs online. There are companies such as:
- Amazon.com
- Rev-A-Shelf.com
- VitalBMX.com
- Academy.com
These companies have discount steel pegs of great quality. Expect to see prices “pegged” at around ten dollars. If steel pegs aren’t your thing, check out the varieties of aluminum and alloy pegs that are available. Sometimes aesthetics is more important than durability. In that case, steel wouldn’t always be the best option for your pegs!
Stainless Steel Peg Board
Among the most commonly referred to steel pegs include the steel pegs that go into the stainless steel peg boards that many carpenters or auto mechanics will make use of to organize their warehouse tools. These steel pegs fit into holes within a pegboard and offer support for anything from rope to power tools to extension cords. If you’re looking for a way to organize chests of tools or rooms of cluttered equipment, consider using stainless steel pegboard. It is easily installed and can hold an impressive amount of weight.
Bicycle Pegs for Stunts
Popular with kids and extreme sports lovers, BMX bikes have long had the need to grind. Without pegs, it’s impossible to slide down a slick surface while balancing your and your bike’s weight upon the sole peg. There are other uses for pegs on bikes besides stunts, too. For instance, second riders can use pegs as a place to put their feet to hold themselves secure against the pick-up of going downhill or at high speeds. Pegs come in a variety of materials that are both used for aesthetic reasons and for durability. Alloys are becoming popular but many remain true to the steel pegs of the early days. If you own a BMX bike and you don’t have pegs yet, invest. They’re about ten bucks each so a quick lawn mowing will mean plenty of extra fun out of your bicycle!
Steel Peg Grinders
If you’re lathing your own steel pegs, you will need a grinder. Grinders are heavy machinery that will bring pieces of metal to a raw cut and beyond, depending on the rotor attachment. Most grinders have features where you can adjust the speed. This allows for fine polishing once the rotor attachments have been swapped between grinders and buffers. Grinders are usually made of a coarse, abrasive substance such as pumice whereas polishers are like fine sandpaper grains. By tapering the end of a cylinder you effectively make a new peg out of thin air.
